You really get what you pay for and I paid a pretty penny for this and am very happy.

The intended purpose is a back up for some field Ham Equipment. Took into field and worked great, after getting use to it.. definitely recommend it.

Extremely well built. Very solid metal construction. Nothing about this feels cheaply made in any way. Works great.Do not try to use it without securing it firmly down. When used properly, the crank should glide like a hot knife through butter. If you try to crank it while holding it, it will NOT crank properly. It will seem very tight, which is the mechanisms being jerked side to side as you rotate, and you will force it very hard. I only used it once to test it, but I am worried some gears may be bent now from trying to force wind it improperly.Again, it is so solidly constructed that I'm sure it is actually fine and I did no damage. Just remember, firmly and securely tie it down, do NOT crank it with one hand while holding it in the other.

If someone has no reference for how much human effort 20watts or 30watts of output are .. this will educate you.:)Get electricity while getting exercise.Nice and compact hand crank generator.At the recommended 1-2 rotations per second rate it has no problem giving 30watt output.The included DC-DC converter works well enough from to allow charging of USB devices and offers a reasonable range of other common voltages.Feels solid and durable.Although not 'loud' , it is also not 'quiet'.The generator square shape is a reasonable compromise .. a smaller device .. functional but not the best ergonomic design for hand on hand use .. functional but not the most secure design for strapping to an object (tree, pole, etc).Although the Amazon add for it was a 30w generator .. the product itself claims a max of 40w .. both are probably correct depending on how you look at it .. I think the add at 30w sets a good expectation for a buyer .. getting over 30w starts is a little tricky .. to simultaneously match output setting , to load consumption , to rotation rate , etc .. thus I think the 40w max listed on the deice is a true 'maximum' as in best case ideal conditions .. I'm glad for consumer expectation it was marketed as 30w .. I personally prefer it this way , too many others over promise and promise / advertise setting consumer expectations too high to that best case ideal situation.

The device has a good quality feel to it. The connectors feel solid and durable, as does the crank.I like having the ability to switch voltages, but wish it could output 1.5v to power other lower voltage devices, but other than that, I can use it to charge my phone, my ham radios, or other various devices in the event of an emergency. I would recommend buying a small solar panel to charge batteries, but it would work to charge small 12v batteries for running small electronics, but it would take a lot of cranking.Time will tell if it will last.I may purchase a different converter, one with more outputs, and possibly with a digital controller, but we'll see if the one supplied will work for my needs.
