It does plug in, it's easy to use with a simple switch, and doesn't take up much space. The first time I used it, it was fine, and kept food at a decent temperature. I just used it again for Thanksgiving and, while it did warm up, it wasn't as effective as it had been previously and my food did get cold.
This is a very handy tool to keep chocolate in temper. Most warming trays are too hot for this task. I ended up purchasing a second one as they are super easy to store! I've also used it for one of our outdoor picnics and it did a great job keep chaffing dishes at the correct temperature.
