I've been looking into purchasing a stand-alone mortising machine, but really didn't want another machine to put somewhere in my shop for only part-time usage. Since I have a Delta full size drill press, I decided to give this a try first for the money to see if it would work for my mortising every now and then. When the product arrived I was quite impressed with the blow molded case and the fit and finish of the product. Good heavy cast metal where it needs to be on the parts, with a good finish as well. The chisels and bits are also packed in their own boxes and weren't chipped and were fairly sharp. Only minor touch up required with a wet stone, if you desire. I like my tools sharp so there is no force needed in their use.
The instructions, while brief and lacking in some aspects, are generally fine. Let's face it, if you're going to buy a mortising attachment for a full size drill press, you should have some workshop knowledge and experience with tools anyway. The attachment to my Delta chuck was a little too tight for my liking before tightening down the screws, to I touched up the C-Ring adapter to fit to my liking with some large vise grips and a large screwdriver to "spread" the C open for easier attachment to the upper collar of the chuck. No problems there. Everything else was a good fit and I simply made a mortising bed to clamp on top of my aftermarket drill press table to attach the mortising fence to. Everything worked as expected. While there is a hold down clamp for the attachment, you need to make sure the item to be mortised fits snug and is aligned well.
It works and for the money can't be beat. Removes easily, and if you make a separate mortising bed base, you just remove it from your drill press table and you're drilling again. Now I have a mortiser that sits under the drill press in a case and doesn't take up floor space, not to mention that it comes with FOUR chisels and bits whereas most stand alone portable mortisers only have three.
Wouldn't recommend for a workbench drill press. Not heavy enough mass wise I feel, even if bolted down.
